Process

For this event I was asked to design a Facebook event banner, Facebook profile picture overlays, and event tickets.

I wanted the design to reflect the cultural aspects of Lunar New Year while still being trendy and flashy enough to attract the college students the event was for. I took inspiration from lantern festivals which are often part of the New Year celebration in Taiwanese and Chinese culture.

Geometric patterns can be seen on the grates of this temple

I also incorporated traditional Chinese geometric ornaments on the border that imitate designs that can be seen in Chinese architecture and design.

Traditionally red and gold are lucky colors, but in order to avoid the tacky imagery young Chinese and Taiwanese Americans are used to I opted for subtle usage of reds and primarily yellow-gold for the type and graphics.

Final Design

The final design uses the lanterns to give a festive feeling while the ornaments references traditional culture. Because it was the year of the rooster I also added graphics of roosters in the style of Chinese paper cutting.
